Year after year my old hunter’s calculation has proven to be extremely accurate for predicting the Midwest Whitetail Deer rutting season. My saying “Wisconsin can set their clocks to it” has been reprinted on this website and my previous one for the last 6 years straight.
My calculation will not make gun hunters happy as the “rut” is the breeding season where bucks are usually holed up with does and not moving much.
Since I had surgery September 30th and won’t be cleared to pull back a bow until November 10th I was afraid the rut would be around the same time as last year (2nd week of November) and I wouldn’t be ready for the pre-rut activity.
I was a little concerned I had miscalculated something when the calculations kicked out such a late date in 2013, but looking at other rut predictions, it’s pretty close to what Charlie Alsheimer and other wildlife biologists have come up with, restoring my confidence in this calculation handed down through generations.
Calculation used to determine the Rut:
2 Full Moon Cycles
1st Day of Rut
Estimated Rut Cycle (Rutting Moon – 2nd Full Moon)
September 22 (Equinox)
October 18th & November 17th (2 Full Moons – Rutting Moon November 17th)
Nov 17 – Nov 27 (10 Days)
November 27 (1st Day of Rut)
November 27-December 11, 2013
It looks like 2014 will be a lot earlier but that will have to wait until October of 2014….
